What is Piano Extravaganza - 2012?
It is an event that the Harrisburg Music Teachers organize. It is a collection of over 200 students and pianists ranging in age from barely a toddler to senior citizens. It is groups of up to 32 playing in ensemble - on the same stage - at the same time - in front of an audience that exceeded 1000. Their repertoire ranges from folk tunes to arrangements of pieces originally written for band or orchestra.
The purpose of Piano Extravaganza is threefold:
1. to raise awareness of the instrument and the joy of learning to play
2. to offer young (and not so young) pianists the opportunity to perform in ensemble
3. to raise scholarship money to allow needy students to continue their study of the instrument.
Dr. Johannes Dietrich, Professor of Music at Lebanon Valley College and conductor of the event meets Cunningham Piano Company's Rich Galassini backstage. |
It accomplished all of these goals easily, but before any of this could happen, they needed solid instruments that could fill a hall the size of The Forum. To find the right choice, the Harrisburg area piano teachers looked 2 hours east to Philadelphia and Cunningham Piano Company.
Debra Nicodemus, one of the event organizers, commented, "I have known of Cunningham for many years. I have used them personally and my students have gone there, so I knew they were the right choice to help us - we could not have done this without them."
We were so pleased to see an event like Piano Extravaganza - 2012 happening. Congratulations to all of the organizers and participants. We cannot wait for the next event!
